Ripple, 2010 by Jess Chia-Ching Lin

Ripple invites the audience to immerse itself in a 'slow art' practice that draws on the painstaking ritual of folding paper lotuses in Taoist and Buddhist funeral ceremonies.

This ritual guides the dead to the afterlife by helping eliminate distractions and lingering desires to remain in this world; it also helps the living remedy mistakes not addressed during the deceased's lifetime.

Drawing on my grandfather's funeral I have transformed hundred's of sheets of paper into lotuses, forming a space that conveys a sense of calm, quietude and stillness and prompting reflection on the relationship between our interior and exterior worlds.
